Refill 014 is the passport booklet with dot grid for the Traveler's Notebook – a simple, thread-stitching-free booklet in saddle-stitch format, filled with white MD paper developed by Designphil in Japan. The dot grid at 5mm intervals lies delicately in gray across the page without interfering with your own handwriting. 64 pages in passport format fit into any cover of the passport system and can be easily combined with other refills using a connecting band.

Highlights

  • MD Paper, white: Developed for fountain pen writing since the 1960s – the surface is smooth enough that writing nibs glide with virtually no resistance, yet firm enough that ink doesn't feather or bleed through. Gel rollers, mechanical pencils and fineliners also run cleanly on this surface.
  • Dot grid, 5mm spacing: The dots serve as an orientation grid without imposing a lined or checkered structure. Tables, diagrams, bullet journal spreads and free text columns can be created equally – the dots optically recede into the background.
  • Saddle-stitch binding (spine stitch): The booklet lies flat on the table and opens completely to the last page – without spine material that restricts writing space.
  • Passport format, 12.4 × 8.9 cm: Precisely dimensioned for the Passport leather cover from Traveler's Company – sits flush in the cover without shifting or wobbling.
  • Made in Japan: MD paper and binding come from Japanese manufacturing.

Application & Tips

  • Fountain pen writing: Fine to medium writing nibs show clear line edges on white MD paper; water-based inks dry quickly without smudging. Heavily wet nibs or very water-rich inks can slightly ripple with large color areas – but the paper is unproblematic for writing texts.
  • Bullet journal in pocket format: The 5mm grid allows consistent spacing for weekly layouts, habit trackers and index pages in the smallest of spaces – without having to print or pre-draw.
  • Sketches and illustrations: The dots serve as a vanishing point grid for perspective sketches or as a drawing grid for panels and layouts, as is common in Japanese manga format.
  • Combination with other refills: The 014 can be connected via a Connecting Band to a lined, blank or calendar refill – so two different booklet types can sit in one passport cover simultaneously.
  • Multiple booklets in parallel: Those who separate different life areas (travel log, notes, drawings) can create one refill per topic and switch or combine as needed.

For Paper Enthusiasts

MD Paper (Midori Diary Paper) was originally conceived by Designphil – the parent company of Traveler's Company – as diary paper for everyday use with fountain pens. The slightly textured, but not rough surface gives graphite pencils minimal grip – a detail that is noticeable when sketching with pencil. White MD paper shows ink colors more naturally than cream-colored papers; blue-black inks appear more saturated, and shading effects of water-based inks become more prominent.
