The Polish Klasyk notebook by Papierniczeni in Earth is a handbound writing journal from a small Kraków manufactory. The cover is made from thick cardboard with a linen spine and gold-embossed lettering – both understated and crafted in equal measure. The earthy tone of the cover feels warm and grounded without being intrusive. Inside: 160 pages of white paper, dot-ruled on a 5 mm grid.

Features

  • Handbound thread binding: The Klasyk opens completely flat – both pages of a spread lie flush, making writing from edge to edge and working on left and right pages equally comfortable.
  • Linen spine with gold embossing: The textile spine made from book linen gives the cover stability and a pleasantly matte feel. The embossed "Notes" lettering in gold is understated – a detail that reveals itself on closer inspection.
  • 100 g/m² paper, FSC-certified: The white paper at 100 g/m² is noticeably heavier than standard notebook paper. It takes ink without buckling, shows minimal show-through, and works equally well with fountain pens, gel pens, fineliners and pencils.
  • 5 mm dot grid: The 5 mm dot spacing is wide enough for generous handwriting and structured layouts, tight enough for precise sketches, diagrams or bullet-journal spreads. The dots are subtly printed and visually recede.
  • Earth colour: The warm, earthy brown of the cover is a muted, natural tone – close to clay or burnt ochre. It harmonises with copper and bronze inks as well as warm grey tones.

Use & Tips

  • Fountain pen: The 100 g/m² paper takes even wetter inks cleanly. Fine to medium nibs, stub nibs and broad nibs produce a beautiful, well-defined line with excellent colour saturation on this paper. Allow a short drying time for very water-rich inks.
  • Bullet journalling: The flat opening is a decisive advantage for BuJo methods – double-page layouts, trackers and monthly spreads can be created without the spine margin getting in the way.
  • Calligraphy: The paper works well for practice pages with broad nibs or flex nibs. The 5 mm grid serves as a helpful structure for x-height and line spacing without imposing a fixed line grid.
  • Sketches and hand lettering: Gel pens and fineliners up to around 0.5 mm show high contrast on the white paper. The weight prevents the underlying surface from showing through.
  • Colour as a mood-setter: The cover's earth tone fits a desk setup aesthetic in warm and natural tones – wood, brass, cork. A notebook that looks good closed too.

For Paper Enthusiasts

Papierniczeni produces the Klasyk in a small manufactory in Kraków, where the thread binding is executed by hand. The binding follows traditional methods: the signatures are sewn individually and then stitched together before the linen spine is applied. This construction allows the notebook to lie completely flat without the spine breaking or the binding giving way – even after intensive use over months. The FSC-certified 100 g/m² paper is uncoated, but has a sufficiently closed surface to limit ink bleeding and preserve colour depth.
