The Hobonichi writing pad "ONE PIECE magazine: Everyday Scenes" shows the Straw Hat crew as you rarely see them: eating, having tea, half asleep – quiet moments between adventure and battle. The design was created in collaboration with the ONE PIECE magazine and is precisely tailored to the A5 format of the Hobonichi Techo Cousin. The material is Yupo, a synthetic paper that feels firm, cool and slightly smooth to the touch – neither soft nor yielding.

Features

  • Perfectly fitted A5 format: The pad sits flush in the Techo Cousin (A5), doesn't extend beyond the book block and closes neatly with the cover.
  • Writing support through Yupo paper: Yupo is a synthetic paper with a uniformly firm, slightly smooth surface. When placed under the page, it prevents ballpoints, gel pens or fineliners from slipping on the Tomoe River S paper of the Techo – and doesn't press indentations through to the back of the written page.
  • "TODAY!!!"-tab as bookmark: The tab at the corner extends beyond the page edge when the pad is in the Techo. This automatically marks the current day's page – no separate bookmark needed.
  • Millimetre ruler on the back: The long edge of the back is divided into millimetres and can be used as a ruler – practical for quick sketches, column divisions or measuring small objects.
  • Back side with additional design: The back shows its own scene from the ONE PIECE universe and makes the pad an eye-catcher when pulled out.
  • Weight 13 g, thickness 0.4 mm: The pad hardly registers in the Techo, neither noticeably changing the writing feel nor the volume of the book.

Use & Tips

  • For ballpoints and gel pens: The Tomoe River S paper of the Hobonichi Techo is thin and slightly yielding. The Yupo pad provides enough counter-pressure when writing so that oil-based ballpoint tips and quick-drying gel tips run cleanly and with stable pressure.
  • For fountain pens: Those writing with a broad nib or flex nib benefit from the uniformly rigid pad – no nib sinking into a soft surface, consistent handwriting on both sides.
  • Daily use: Insert the pad between the pages, orient the tab upwards – the next time you open the Techo, the correct page is found immediately.
  • As a ruler: Use the millimetre ruler on the back for quick divisions of planning grids or columns in bullet journal layouts without needing to reach for extra tools.
  • Cleaning: Yupo is water-repellent and can be wiped down with a slightly damp cloth – stamp ink or accidentally applied ink usually comes off without residue.

For Hobonichi Enthusiasts

Yupo is not paper in the classical sense, but a biaxially drawn polypropylene film with a paper-like surface – manufactured in Japan. The surface is non-porous, so it doesn't absorb ink but lets it dry and sit on top. This explains why water-soluble inks take longer to dry on Yupo than on cotton or wood pulp paper – and why the pad itself shows no ink traces after years as long as it isn't written on directly. For its function as a writing pad, this property is ideal: the page of the Techo remains the sole writing surface, while Yupo underneath stays stable and neutral. The "Everyday Scenes" design was developed as part of the ongoing collaboration between Hobonichi and the ONE PIECE magazine and deliberately shows no battle scenes, but rather the quiet in-between moments of the Straw Hat crew – thematically fitting to the character of a daily planner.
