The Hobonichi HON is the Techo in book form – a lightly flexible hardcover planner that requires no additional cover. The "Vine" model from the V&A Series was created in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and features William Morris' wallpaper design "Vine" from 1873 on its cover: lush grapes entwined in densely set foliage, printed on a canvas-like rayon material that reveals the sketch lines and natural color variations of the original. Inside: Tomoe River Paper, one day per page, thread-bound, made in Japan.

Special Features

  • Rayon cover on lightweight hardcover: The cover material has slight print resistance but still gives way – the book can be held and opened like a compact notebook without breaking or tearing. The textile-like surface showcases the Morris pattern with visible texture and color depth.
  • William Morris "Vine," 1873: Morris designed "Vine" between 1872 and 1876 as one of 17 wallpaper designs – characteristic of his approach to combining stylized natural forms with subtle geometric structure. The motif features ripe grapes in dense foliage and is among the most renowned works of the Arts and Crafts movement.
  • Tomoe River Paper: Thin, light, yet durable – the paper takes ink well and offers a pleasantly smooth writing surface. Fountain pens, fineliners, and gel pens work particularly well on Tomoe River; ink dries somewhat more slowly but develops especially vibrant colors and pronounced shading. Not archive-quality.
  • Thread-bound binding, opens flat at 180°: The thread binding allows the planner to lie completely flat and stay open – without needing to hold the pages. This makes it equally comfortable to use on a desk or on the go.
  • One page per day: The interior grid measures 3.7 mm (on monthly pages 3.45 mm), with yearly calendar 2026–2028, yearly index, and monthly calendar December 2026 through March 2028, 377 daily pages, and 17 memo pages.
  • Monthly colors and quotations: Each month is printed in a different color, facilitating navigation; a daily quote appears on each spread.
  • Year number on spine: The year 2027 is embossed on the spine – practical for organizing on shelves alongside other editions.
  • Two ribbon bookmarks: Two ribbon bookmarks included.
  • Japanese edition: The Japanese edition includes Solar Terms (the 24 seasonal divisions of the East Asian calendar), "Phrases to Break That Writer's Block," useful sign language phrases, and a Kanda/Jinbo-cho map from Hobonichi's neighborhood in Tokyo.

Use & Tips

  • Fountain pens: Tomoe River Paper is the first choice for fountain pen enthusiasts. Fine to medium nibs glide particularly smoothly on the smooth surface. Those writing with broad or flex nibs benefit from ink absorption: color gradations in shading are particularly clear on Tomoe River. Inks require some drying time – with water-based inks approximately 10–30 seconds depending on the fill.
  • Fineliners and gel pens: For bullet journaling, drawing, and hand lettering, pigment-based fineliners work reliably on Tomoe River without bleeding through. Gel pens with quick-drying tips significantly reduce drying time.
  • Daily structure with open grid: The 3.7 mm grid is small enough for detailed time planning and large enough to accommodate occasional sketches, mind maps, or pasted elements (tickets, labels, washi tape). One page per day provides room for both.
  • As a standalone planner: The HON contains the same content as the Original Techo, but with integrated hardcover – it is fully functional without an additional cover. For those who prefer not to swap covers and want a compact bound book.
  • Combination with HON covers: The HON is not compatible with the regular Hobonichi Clear Cover on Cover; however, there is a specially fitting HON A6 Clear Cover.

For Arts and Crafts Enthusiasts

William Morris designed "Vine" in 1873 during his most productive wallpaper phase. All Morris wallpapers were printed by Jeffery & Co. in Islington, London, using wooden blocks. In these designs, Morris combined stylized natural forms with subtle, complex geometric structure – a principle that defined the Arts and Crafts movement and continues today as a countermodel to industrial mass production. On the HON cover, the design is printed on a canvas-like, structured material that preserves the sketch lines and natural color variations of the ink – a printing decision that approximates the historical character of woodblock printing. The cover bears Morris' famous quotation, embossed in gold foil: "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."
