Hobonichi Cover minä perhonen: skyful (Yellow) (A6)
The A6 cover "skyful" in yellow is a collaboration between Hobonichi and Japanese design brand minä perhonen – featuring a motif that captivated the Hobonichi community back in 2014. The base is soft cotton fabric adorned with multicoloured embroidered dots in two different yarn types: a pattern full of points reminiscent of a clear, star-filled sky. Inside and on the pen loops, a vibrant yellow shines through.
Features
- Embroidery in two yarn types: The combination of different thread materials creates varying surface textures – some dots sit flat in the fabric, whilst others have a slightly raised, tactile texture. This is distinctly noticeable when handling the cover daily.
- Exclusive colour – Hobonichi only: The yellow of this cover was developed exclusively for the Hobonichi Techo and is not part of minä perhonen's regular collection – a colour combination that exists nowhere else in this form.
- Butterfly-stopper pen loops: Two pen loops in bright yellow material function like a clasp – thread a pen through both loops and the book stays securely closed without needing a rubber band or magnetic closure.
- Original lace ribbon bookmark by minä perhonen: The bookmark is made from the brand's original lace ribbon – a small textile detail that complements the embroidered overall design.
- Each cover is unique: Because all Hobonichi covers are handcrafted, the placement of the embroidery pattern varies slightly from piece to piece – no two covers are exactly identical.
- Fit: This cover is designed for the Hobonichi Techo Original and planner in A6 format. It opens flat to 180 degrees.
Use & Tips
- Check pen diameter: The pen loops are designed for pens up to approximately 13.5 mm outer diameter. Slim fineliners, ballpoints and many fountain pens fit easily; thicker grip sections or triangular pens may be tight.
- Avoid colour rub-off: As with all intensely dyed textile surfaces, friction, pressure or moisture can cause colour transfer. It's best not to press light leather items or white paper directly against the cover for extended periods.
- Protect the lace ribbon: Don't pull out individual protruding threads on the bookmark – instead gently push them back into the ribbon structure, and it will stay beautiful for longer.
- Embroidery threads: Individual threads may occasionally protrude in the embroidered areas – this is due to the manufacturing process and is not a fault, but rather a characteristic of handcrafted textile work.
- Cleaning: Gentle dabbing with a slightly damp cloth is sufficient for small stains; full washing is not recommended to protect the embroidery and colour.
For Textile Enthusiasts
The skyful motif traces back to an earlier minä perhonen design called "galileo" – hand-drawn star shapes by designer Akira Minagawa, later realised as embroidery. The origin lies in Minagawa's desire to recreate the irregular, organic quality of hand embroidery through machine stitching: the machines in the lace factory in the mountains of Kanagawa Prefecture run at one-third normal speed, allowing the needles to work slowly and precisely. For the original skyful textile, Minagawa chose rayon threads for lustre and cotton threads for matte accents – an interplay that continues in the current yellow colour variation with its bespoke colour palette developed exclusively for Hobonichi.
