Miruai – "the deer-horn seaweed fluttering in the deep sea" – is one of the spring colours in the Sailor Shikiori collection: a rich blue-green with a bluish depth that shifts between dark blue ivy and cool sea-green depending on the paper and nib width. Shikiori (四季織) means "the four seasons", and each colour in this line is dedicated to a specific moment in nature in Japan. The water-based dye ink flows smoothly and gently – with pronounced shading potential that really shines on smooth, calendered paper and Tomoe River paper.

Features

  • Miruai Colour: Deep blue-green with a bluish cast – dark lines shift to a brilliant sea-green with broad nibs; fine nibs produce rich, clear strokes.
  • Pronounced Shading: The dye-based formula creates visible light-dark gradations within a single line – particularly striking with stub nibs, flex nibs and dip pen nibs on smooth paper.
  • Copper Shimmer (Sheen): On absorbent, smooth paper (such as Tomoe River), Miruai displays a bronze-copper lustre in heavily saturated areas.
  • Water-based Dye Formula: Compatible with all fountain pen types and nib widths – no thickening, no clogging, easy to rinse out from nib and converter.
  • Square Glass Bottle with Gold Cap: The compact 20 ml bottle sits comfortably in your hand when filling; the gold screw cap seals securely and makes a pleasant focal point on your desk.
  • Included Converter Stickers: Small labels bearing the ink name are included – handy for labelling converters, bottles or ink sample cards.
  • Not Permanent: Dye-based and not water-resistant – not suitable for documents that might become permanently wet.

Use & Tips

  • Nib Width and Colour Effect: With a fine or extra-fine nib, Miruai appears dark and concentrated, almost like a dark blue-green. With a stub nib or broad nib, the full colour range opens up – from near-black depths to fresh sea-green at the line edges.
  • Paper Recommendation: On Tomoe River paper, Miruai displays maximum shading and the copper sheen effect. On calendered, smooth paper, the ink flows evenly and dries in a pleasant timeframe. On more absorbent paper, the shading is less pronounced, but the ink dries faster.
  • Dip Pen Nibs and Calligraphy: The ink is also suitable for dip pens – ideal for calligraphic work with broad or stub nibs, where the colour gradation within a stroke creates a particularly decorative effect.
  • Ink Samples Before Purchase: If you'd like to get to know a new colour, we recommend testing Miruai on your favourite paper – it can look quite different depending on the paper type and light conditions.
  • Care: After prolonged non-use, rinse your fountain pen with clean water. The ink cleans easily and leaves no residue.

For Ink Enthusiasts

Miruai belongs to the spring group of the Shikiori collection (Izayoi no Yume) and sits in the rare blue-green spectrum – a shade that is neither pure blue nor pure green, but carries both tones within it. The bronze-copper sheen requires a layer of colour pigment in the wet area: it appears most distinctly with broad, wet nibs on slowly absorbing papers like Tomoe River. Those using an EF or F nib will experience Miruai more as a dark, calm blue-green without strong sheen – but with a sharp, clear line. Using it on calendered paper with a stub nib is the combination where the full range of shading and sheen becomes visible.
