Sailor fountain pen ink Shikiori Yukiakari (雪明 – "Snowlight") belongs to the winter line of the Shikiori collection and translates the cool, diffuse glow of freshly fallen snow into a bright turquoise blue with a subtle icy tone. Water-based dye ink, 20 ml in a compact square glass bottle – designed for everyday use in fountain pens.

Features

  • Yukiakari colour – bright turquoise blue: Clear, fresh blue with a cool turquoise cast. On smooth, calendered paper, the full colour clarity unfolds; on lightly absorbent paper, the tone appears more muted and softer. The colour is particularly suited to journalling, letter writing and handwritten notes, where legibility and colour mood matter equally.
  • Water-based dye ink: Dissolves without residue in water – no clogging of ink channels or converters with regular use. Cleaning and refilling work straightforwardly with plain water.
  • Broadly compatible: The formulation is gentle on metal housings, plastic ink channels and all common nib sizes – from fine EF nibs to stub nibs. Also unproblematic in fountain pens with sensitive rubber seals.
  • Even ink flow: The viscosity is balanced so the ink writes neither too wet nor too dry. The stroke remains precise without feathering – even at fast writing speeds.
  • Not archival: Water-based dye ink without iron gall content – not water-resistant and not light-fast for archival purposes. For everyday writing, journalling and creative applications, this property is inconsequential in daily use.
  • Square glass bottle, 20 ml: The compact bottle (34 × 34 × 58 mm) stands stably on the desk. The flat design allows filling the converter even at low fill level – the bottle won't tip over and can be used down to the last drop.
  • Shikiori winter collection: Yukiakari belongs to the "Izayoi no Yume" line of the Shikiori series, which translates Japanese natural moments into ink colours. The four winter colours are coordinated with each other and combine well.

Use & Tips

  • On ink-fast, smooth paper, Yukiakari shows the clearest colour tone and strongest luminosity – ideal for calendered paper at 90 g/m² or higher.
  • With a stub nib or a wet-writing nib, the colour nuance is shown to best advantage, as more ink lies on the paper and makes the bright turquoise tone visible.
  • For calligraphy practice with this colour, papers with a smooth surface are recommended – the ink dries in a pleasant timeframe and shows no nib scratches or settling marks.
  • If you use multiple Shikiori colours in parallel: the bottles can be stored upright, the screw cap closes tightly and prevents evaporation over extended storage periods.
  • With prolonged non-use of the fountain pen, a thorough rinse with water is recommended – dye inks can clog slightly when dry, but dissolve completely without residue.

For Ink Enthusiasts

Sailor produces the Shikiori inks in Japan using water-based dye chemistry (dye-ink) without particles or pigments. This means: no sediment at the bottom of the bottle, no risk of clogging fine nibs. The colour intensity of Yukiakari is deliberately kept light – a fountain pen with a gold nib and wider ink flow will deliver more colour depth than a narrow steel nib. On certain papers, the ink displays a subtle sheen effect that can show as a delicate red tone on the dry edge.
