The "Richter" writing case from Sonnenleder is a handcrafted pouch made from vegetable-tanned South German cowhide. Pit tanning – one of the oldest and most time-consuming methods of leather production – gives the material a lively, breathable surface with visible texture. The result: a warm, slightly rough feel and a characteristic, earthy leather scent from the moment you first open it. Over time, the piece develops an individual patina through contact with rain, sun and warmth – each case becomes a unique item.

Features

  • Vegetable pit-tanned leather from selected South German cowhides: The leather develops a distinctive, personal patina with use – no two pieces look the same after years.
  • Fully leather-lined interior: Your pens touch only leather inside – no synthetics, no fabric that scuffs or transfers colour.
  • Three rubber loops for one fountain pen and two additional pens up to 14 cm in length: The loops hold securely without damaging the pen body.
  • Quality zip closure: Seals the case completely and protects even delicate nibs from external mechanical pressure.
  • Pure craftsmanship: Each piece is individually made – stitching, edges and fit are the result of manual care, not industrial mass production.

Use & Tips

  • For fountain pens up to 14 cm in length – fits most standard and travel fountain pens when closed, such as compact piston-fillers or cartridge pens.
  • The middle loop offers slightly more room and works well for thicker grip sections or triangular pens.
  • Caring for the leather with a colourless beeswax-based leather conditioner keeps it supple and slows drying – especially recommended in dry climates.
  • The case closes flat and fits easily into bags, document cases or laptop bags without taking up much space.
  • Water marks on vegetable-tanned leather are not damage – they usually smooth out as they dry and become part of the patina.

For Leather Enthusiasts

Vegetable pit tanning differs fundamentally from faster chrome tanning: the leather lies in pits with tannin solutions from tree bark for weeks or months and absorbs the tanning agent evenly and deeply. The result is a firm, breathable material with high tensile strength that responds to moisture and warmth – and precisely for this reason develops a genuine patina rather than ageing uniformly. The use of South German cowhides means short transport routes and traceable raw material origins. Sonnenleder manufactures in Germany and is among the few remaining workshops that still implement this process entirely by hand.
