The Sonnenleder "Kluge" pencil case in mocca brown is a writing utensil case handcrafted from premium South German leather, traditionally tanned in Germany using purely vegetable pit tanning. The matte mocca brown has a warm, grounded appearance; the first thing you notice when you pick it up is the firm, slightly textured surface – along with the subtle, unmistakeable scent of natural leather. At 19 × 7 × 2.5 cm, the "Kluge" lies flat in any bag while holding a complete writing set for desk or on-the-go writing.
Features
- Space for one fountain pen and four additional pens up to 17 cm in length – German-made rubber loops hold writing instruments of varying thicknesses securely without pressure marks.
- Separate flat leather compartment for a ruler up to 17 cm, stamps or other flat items – entirely leather, no synthetic lining.
- Tab for eraser or sharpener – accessories stay separate from writing instruments and are immediately at hand.
- Leather interior lining – protects delicate nibs and finishes from scratches, gives the case interior structure and makes handling more pleasant.
- Polished premium metal zip from Germany – runs smoothly, closes the case completely and keeps everything securely in place even when the case is turned upside down.
- Purely vegetable pit tanning – the leather contains no chromium salts; the surface remains lively and breathes. Through exposure to moisture, heat and light, each case develops its own unique patina over time.
- Pure handcraft from the manufactory – each piece is made individually; the even seam edges and careful edge finishing make this evident.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens and ink rollers fit securely in the wider fountain pen loop without slipping – suitable for piston-fill and converter fountain pens in standard to large capacity formats.
- Fineliners, mechanical pencils and ballpoints fit in the four additional loops; the rubber elasticity accommodates thicker bodies without pinching.
- On the go: The firm, pit-tanned leather remains dimensionally stable even without a hard case and protects delicate nibs from pressure and knocks in your bag.
- Ruler compartment as multi-purpose pocket: Also fits business cards, folded notepaper or narrow refill leads – anything flat that measures up to 17 cm.
- Break-in period: Fresh pit-tanned leather is initially quite firm; after several weeks of regular use, the case becomes more supple and opens and closes more easily.
- Leather care: Occasional rubbing with a colourless leather care product keeps the mocca brown rich and protects the surface after contact with water.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Pit tanning is the most time-consuming form of vegetable tanning: the hides pass through multiple tanning pits over weeks with increasingly concentrated tanning liquors based on barks, roots and fruits – a process that gives the leather time to deeply absorb the tannins. The result is a leather with a high tannin content that feels firmer and more dimensionally stable than more quickly tanned material. The "lively surface
