The "Kluge" writing case from Sonnenleder is a sleek pen case made from purely plant-tanned cattle leather from southern Germany – handcrafted in Germany. The surface has a velvety, slightly cool grip from the start and the characteristic, subtle leather scent that arises from plant pit tanning. At 19 × 7 × 2.5 cm, the case slides easily into any bag or desk drawer without taking up much space. The zip model offers more protection for pens than open roll cases – especially during transport.

• Five individual loops: A wider rubber loop is specifically sized for fountain pens – it holds even chunky models with clip rings securely without scratching the cap. Four additional loops accommodate pens, liners, or mechanical pencils up to 17 cm in length.

Application & Tips

• Fountain pen compatibility: The fountain pen loop is designed for standard formats. Particularly long or very wide fountain pens (e.g., jumbo models) should be checked beforehand for 17 cm total length.
• Pen combinations: The four pen loops accommodate both slim fineliners and thicker mechanical pencils. For brush pen users: brush pens with caps typically fit as long as they remain under 17 cm.
• Leather care: Plant-tanned leather responds to dryness with stiffening. A subtle application of colorless leather fat (e.g., lanolin-based) every few months maintains suppleness and slows uncontrolled darkening.
• Breaking in: In the first few weeks, the loops may be quite tight. With increasing use, they adapt to the pen diameters – the rubber fabric contracts slightly with heat and becomes slightly firmer in cold.
• Water marks: Fresh water marks on plant-tanned leather initially appear dark. Simply moisten evenly and allow to dry – the tone will even out and become part of the patina.
• Ruler in the compartment: The flat leather compartment easily accommodates metal rulers up to 17 cm. Plastic rulers with sharp edges can leave impressions over time – metal rulers are the better choice here.

The cattle leather used comes exclusively from southern Germany and is processed in Germany using the traditional pit tanning method – a process in which hides soak for several months in plant-based tanning liquors made from tree bark and other plant materials. This slow tanning creates particularly firm, texture-rich leather with a high tannin content that contains no synthetic chromium salts.
