Use & Tips

• For fountain pens with delicate nibs: The all-round zip keeps the case completely closed – no pen can slip out, no ink stains occur from external pressure. Ideal for transporting multiple fountain pens at once.
• Leather care: Vegetable-tanned leather takes leather balm well. Light application of leather care every few months maintains suppleness and stabilises the developing patina. Allow moisture to dry naturally, avoid direct heat.
• Running-in period: Fresh from the manufactory, the leather is somewhat stiff. After a few weeks of regular use, the case becomes more supple and adapts to its contents – the pen slots widen gently and then hold the instruments with a pleasant grip.

The traditional pit tanning method, as used by Sonnenleder, is one of the most labour-intensive tanning processes available: hides pass through several pits, each with slightly increasing tannin concentrations, over a period of several weeks. Unlike industrial chrome tanning – which takes only a few days – vegetable tanning leaves no toxic metal salts in the material. The finished tanned leather contains up to 30% vegetable tannins in the fibres, giving it greater density, strength and the typical patina behaviour. The lively surface of the Kafka case is not a design feature but a direct result of this open-pored, unglazed tanning method – it absorbs finger oils, light and warmth and changes permanently as a result.
