Sonnenleder pencil case "Lenz" natural

The Sonnenleder writing case "Lenz" is a handcrafted pen case made from purely vegetable-tanned southern German beef leather – inside and out. The natural color is not a paint finish, but the undyed leather itself: warm, light brown vegetable tanning with a lively surface, velvety grip, and the characteristic, slightly earthy scent of the pit tanning process. At 19 × 7 × 2.5 cm, it safely and compactly protects nine writing instruments – including a fountain pen.

Features

• Purely vegetable pit tanning: The leather is tanned without chromium or synthetic tanning agents using the traditional pit method. The result is a firm, full-bodied surface with natural breathability – noticeably smooth, but not sterile smooth.
• Selected southern German cowhides: Sonnenleder processes exclusively hides from southern Germany. Regional origin is part of the quality concept and makes each piece traceable.
• Inner lining of split leather: The inner lining consists of undyed, rough split leather – no synthetic lining that scratches writing instruments or builds up static charge.
• Nine rubber loops: One larger loop is designed for a fountain pen, eight others accommodate pens up to 17 cm in length. The rubber webbing comes from Germany and holds writing instruments securely without crushing them.
• Additional loop for small items: A separate, smaller loop offers space for an eraser, pencil sharpener, or USB stick.
• Matt nickel-plated brass zippers: Polished metal zippers from Germany – no plastic sliders that break or snag.
• Lively patina as a feature, not a flaw: Moisture, heat, and light alter the surface over time – the leather darkens irregularly until a closed patina forms. Each case develops its own character.
• Handcrafted: Every piece is individually made in the Sonnenleder manufactory in Bodmann-Ludwigshafen (Germany).

Use & Tips

• Fountain pen with converter or piston filler: The wide fountain pen loop accommodates larger models – a TWSBI 580 or a classic piston filler with slightly more girth fits easily.
• Ruler slot: Under the fountain pen loop, a ruler up to approximately 17 cm can be inserted – useful for those who sketch with rulers or draw baseline guides.
• Care almost unnecessary: Since the leather has retained its natural properties, it requires hardly any care. Re-oiling or waterproofing agents can damage the surface more than help – it's best to simply use the leather and let the patina do its work.
• Break-in phase: In the first weeks, the leather darkens irregularly when exposed to moisture (hand perspiration, rain). This is not a defect, but a sign of consistently undyed natural leather.

For Leather Enthusiasts

The leather of the "Lenz" comes from traditional pit tanning: The hides first undergo the "color cycle" in increasingly concentrated tanning solutions before resting in the "vat" for months. This process creates a particularly high tannin content in the leather – up to 30% tannins – which gives the leather its characteristic firmness, body, and dimensional stability. Since no chromium(III) salts are used, there is no risk of later oxidation to toxic Cr(VI). The natural leather is chromium-free and low in pollutants, making it particularly suitable for people with chromium sensitivity. The surface of the "Lenz" is undyed and displays the natural vegetable tanning color of the cowhide – the natural color is thus not created by pigments, but is the result of the tanning process itself.
