Sonnenleder pencil case "Berit klein" natural
The Sonnenleder "Berit klein" pen case is a simple, robust leather pouch made from vegetable-tanned cowhide – tanned in Germany and crafted by hand. The natural colour displays the characteristic warm reddish-brown tone that undyed Sonnenleder naturally possesses. A main compartment with a full-length zip accommodates a handful of pens, liners or fountain pens with ease – compact enough for a bag or rucksack, spacious enough for daily needs.
Features
- Vegetable-tanned leather, undyed: Tanned without chromium salts, exclusively with plant-based tannins. The result is chrome-free, skin-friendly leather with an open pore structure – it breathes, responds to moisture and touch, and develops a unique patina over time.
- Natural tone "natural": The undyed leather has a slightly light brown-reddish base tone. Early signs of use and light exposure cause the surface to darken irregularly – each piece develops its own colour pattern.
- Hand-crafted in Germany: Cut and sewn at the Sonnenleder manufactory; seams and edges show the characteristic appearance of careful handwork.
- Full-length zip: A single zip closes the main compartment completely. Contents stay secure, even if the case tips onto its side or gets buried in a full bag.
- Compact format: 22 × 7.5 × 3 cm – slim enough to fit into any outer pocket of a rucksack, deep enough for fountain pens up to approximately 14–15 cm in length.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens and rollerball pens: The case comfortably holds five to eight medium-weight writing instruments. For delicate nibs, a thin microfibre insert or wrapping in soft cloth is recommended – the leather inside is untreated.
- Actively shaping the patina: Vegetable-tanned leather responds to skin contact, light and moisture. If you carry the case daily in hand, you'll accelerate patina development at grip points – the surface becomes darker and silkier there.
- Care: The leather is not impregnated and not sealed. Occasional rubbing with a colourless leather fat or wax keeps the surface supple and protects against drying out.
- Transporting liners and markers: Those working with fineliners or brush pens will find a reliable travel case here – the zip securely holds capped pens.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Sonnenleder uses selected southern German cowhides, which are vegetable-tanned according to a traditional recipe. The tannins come from bark, roots and fruits; after drying, the hides are greased in a barrel – without synthetic sealing. The result is an open-pore full-grain leather that absorbs and releases moisture, feels softer with use, and develops a patina that depends exclusively on wear and environment. Irregularities in the grain and surface structure are not concealed – they make each piece unique.
