The Sonnenleder pen case "Mörike" is a compact leather pouch designed for two large-diameter writing instruments – fountain pens, piston-fill pens or thick pens up to 16 mm diameter fit securely inside. The cowhide is tanned using traditional vegetable methods in Germany and finished by hand: firm to the touch, warm to the feel, with a characteristic leather scent. The natural finish is completely undyed – the pale, cream-coloured leather responds to light, heat and handling, developing a deep, honey-coloured patina over time.

Features

  • 2 pen loops for large writing instruments: The loops are sized to accommodate diameters up to 16 mm – large-capacity fountain pens, thick piston-fill pens or wide mechanical pencils fit securely with no rattle and no risk of scratching.
  • Additional flat leather pocket: A separate interior compartment holds flat companions – a small ruler, stamps, business cards or a folded blotter. No zip pulls, no plastic: the pocket is crafted entirely from leather.
  • Leather lining throughout: The interior is not lined with fabric or synthetic material, but is also made from leather. This protects your writing instruments from abrasion and gives the case the characteristic firmness of vegetable-tanned material throughout.
  • Quality zip fastener: The full-length zip keeps the case securely closed – no pens working loose, nothing popping open in your bag. The fastener runs smoothly and closes firmly.
  • Vegetable-tanned cowhide, made in Germany: The leather is tanned using vegetable tannins – tannins from tree bark and plant roots – without chromium or synthetic additives. The result is a firm, open-pore leather with natural grain and distinctive character.
  • Natural finish – a living material: The natural version is completely undyed. The initially pale, slightly creamy tone deepens under light exposure and through regular use, gradually shifting towards amber and warm brown – each case develops its own unique, unmistakable patina.

Use & Tips

  • Fountain pens with large barrel diameter: The loops accommodate up to 16 mm barrel diameter – ideal for voluminous piston-fill pens that are too tight in standard cases. Cap on, pen inserted, case closed: your fountain pen sits without pressure and without movement.
  • Transport in rucksacks or briefcases: The compact format of 17.0 × 7.0 × 2.8 cm and the full-length zip ensure that ink cartridges, converters and nib geometry remain undamaged during travel.
  • Combination with accessories: The flat leather pocket holds space for a 15 cm ruler, stamps or an ink converter in its packaging – everything you need for writing on the go in one place.
  • Developing patina intentionally: If you want to develop the natural tone deliberately, you can occasionally expose the case to short bursts of diffuse daylight. Direct sunlight accelerates colour deepening. Re-conditioning is usually unnecessary and may alter the leather.
  • Care: Vegetable-tanned leather is open-pore and absorbs moisture. If wet, blot briefly and air dry – not with a hairdryer or heating. Water marks usually fade with continued use or blend into the patina.

For Leather Enthusiasts

Vegetable-tanned leather – also known as plant-tanned or bark-tanned leather – is one of the oldest tanning methods in existence. The tannins from tree bark, roots and fruits bind slowly and firmly to the collagen fibres of the hide, creating leather with high structural density and natural dimensional stability. Unlike chrome-tanned leather, it contains no heavy metal salts; the surface remains open-pore, the fibre retains its character. The Mörike case's natural colour is completely undyed: the leather shows the genuine tone of the tanning process itself – a warm, initially pale beige that gradually matures through UV light and skin oils into a deep amber tone. This interplay of material, use and time makes each piece unique.
