Sonnenleder pencil case "Nietzsche" natural
The „Nietzsche" by Sonnenleder is a writing case crafted from southern German cowhide, made entirely by hand in Germany. The leather is created using traditional pit tanning – a purely botanical process that gives the material a lively, breathing surface and leaves behind a characteristic, warm leather scent. In hand, it feels soft and pleasantly smooth with a light oily patina, as is typical of vegetable-tanned leather – and it develops with every use: rain, warmth and light gradually build an unmistakeable patina over time.
Features
- Southern German cowhide, traditionally pit tanned and purely vegetable tanned – no chrome leather, no synthetic tanning agents. The natural surface shows the leather's light, original colour and takes on depth and character over time.
- 8 loops for writing instruments: one wide loop for a fountain pen up to 170 mm in length and 16 mm in diameter, seven narrower loops for pencils, fineliner pens, coloured pencils or ballpoints.
- One wide strap for a ruler or set square up to 17 cm in length – practical for anyone who sketches, draws or designs on the move.
- Two additional straps for erasers or sharpeners, so the case really holds everything you need for work.
- Leather lining throughout – no fabric lining that wears out or transfers dyes onto writing instruments. The inner surface lies soft against lacquered finishes and metal surfaces.
- German-made rubber webbing bands provide secure grip without clamping pressure – writing instruments are held safely but never pinched or scratched.
- Polished metal zip closure seals the case completely and protects the contents from falling out, whether in a rucksack or bag.
- Completely handmade in Germany – cutting, stitching and assembly all by hand, evident in precise seam work and even edges.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens up to 170 mm in length and 16 mm in diameter fit in the wide loop – this covers most common piston and cartridge-fill fountain pens. Particularly thicker models with larger grip diameters should be measured beforehand.
- Vegetable-tanned leather benefits from occasional care with colourless leather balm or beeswax – this keeps the surface supple and supports the development of patina.
- Those using the case as a travel etui can also use the ruler strap for a thin metal ruler card or folding ruler.
- Fresh natural leather has a pronounced, pleasant tanning scent that fades over time – anyone sensitive to smell can air the case for a few days with the lid open.
- For calligraphers: the wide fountain pen loop also accommodates parallel nibs or wider writing instruments; the narrower loops work well for fineliner pens, Ecoline markers or thin brushes.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Pit tanning is one of the oldest tanning methods and takes considerably longer than rapid chrome tanning – sometimes several months. The leather is slowly tanned in pits with botanical tanning liquors (such as oak bark extract). The result is a firm, full-bodied leather with high tensile strength and the ability to patina, which behaves differently from chrome-tanned leather: it is initially somewhat stiffer but becomes increasingly supple with use and care, moulding itself to personal usage patterns. The natural, undyed colour means the material reacts more noticeably to moisture and light, and wear marks become part of its surface rather than being hidden.
