The Midori 5-Year Diary Gate is a five-year journal bound in black linen with gold foil embossing, sewn with thread binding and printed on cream-coloured MD paper. Each day of the year has its own page, divided into five horizontal sections: space for one entry per year, spanning five years on the same sheet. From the second year onwards, opening the book reveals something special: a glimpse back at the same day from the previous year.
Features
- 5-year structure across 366 pages: Each page is divided into five sections – one per year, always on the same date. The compact fields encourage precise, daily entries: a sentence, a thought, a moment.
- MD paper, cream-coloured, 6 mm ruled: MD paper takes ink quickly without absorbing it – fountain pen ink dries evenly, colours remain clear and vibrant. The cream-white tone makes light and pastel inks particularly striking. The gently wavy ruling looks hand-drawn.
- Thread binding: The book opens completely flat and lies stable in your hand – no creasing, no spine strain even after years of use.
- Linen cover with gold foil embossing: The black fabric cover is firm but not rigid. The gold embossing on cover and spine is understated.
- Monthly register as edge illustration: Each month begins with a gate illustration; the pages are printed differently at the edges for each month, serving as a visible register – the book opens directly to your desired month.
- Two ribbon bookmarks: One for the current year, one for an entry you wish to revisit.
- 3-page appendix: For personal details, notes or New Year's resolutions – use as you see fit.
- Slipcase included: A matching cardboard slipcase protects the book on the shelf and during transport.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens and fine liners: MD paper is fountain pen-friendly – inks with moderate flow perform particularly well. Fine to medium nibs make optimal use of the 6 mm ruling; stub nibs can quickly hit the line limits on the narrow section areas.
- Daily minimal note: The small sections are no drawback – they lower the barrier to entry. A sentence about a meal, an overheard quote, a place you visited is enough. That's what makes the long-term value.
- Watercolour and fine sketches: MD paper tolerates light watercolour washes and pigment liners; it's not designed for highly aqueous techniques or large areas. Small sketches or vignettes fit well within a daily section.
- Date-independent start: The 5-year diary is not tied to a calendar year – it can be started on any day of the year. An entry in the appendix helps you record your own start year.
- Second ribbon bookmark as review marker: If you want to jump back to a specific entry from the previous year, you can set the second ribbon as a fixed anchor – for example, for anniversaries or recurring events.
For Diary Enthusiasts
Midori's Gate format belongs to the Multi-Year Diary line, available in 3-, 5- and 10-year variants. The name "Gate" refers to the gate illustrations that frame each month's beginning – twelve different motifs, one per month, which repeat across the years and give the book its own visual time structure. MD paper (short for "Midori Diary Paper") was developed specifically for diary writing requirements: high ink permanence with low show-through, even with multiple entries over five years on the same page.
