Box with Chiyogami Cover Red Triangles
This slip-case box – known in bookbinding as a box with a neck – is made entirely by hand from cardboard at a Berlin social workshop and covered with Japanese chiyogami paper. The vibrant red triangle pattern on a white ground features hand-screened kozu paper, with each colour layer applied individually in a labour-intensive screen-printing process – the unprinted paper edges remain visible, bearing witness to its handcrafted manufacture. The patterns draw inspiration from classical Japanese kimono textiles, bringing centuries-old imagery into a contemporary storage object. The box is available in three sizes: B6+, A5+ and A4+.
Features
- Slip-case construction (box with neck): Lid and base close flush on the outside – there is no protruding rim as with a slipcase box. The lid sits firmly but lifts off easily.
- Chiyogami covering made from kozu paper: Each sheet is hand screen-printed, with each colour applied separately. The paper edges remain unprinted – a characteristic feature of authentic chiyogami that reveals its handcrafted origin.
- Red triangle pattern: Geometric, high-contrast design in red and white – clean and understated at once, inspired by Japanese kimono textiles.
- Light protection through closed construction: The flush-closing lid protects contents from light – suitable for light-sensitive materials such as photographs, negatives or delicate paper.
- Handmade in a Berlin social workshop: Each box is a one-off piece of careful craftsmanship.
Use & Tips
- Letters and cards: The B6+ size (internal dimensions 165 × 115 × 40 mm) comfortably holds B6-format envelopes and letters, ideal for correspondence collections or handwritten cards.
- Wrapping small gifts: The box is packaging in itself – the chiyogami covering makes additional gift wrap unnecessary.
- Storing light-sensitive objects: Photographs, slides, negatives or delicate prints find a safe, light-protected home in this tightly closing box.
- Desk and shelf: The box can be placed edge to edge since there is no overhanging lid rim to create gaps – perfect for neat rows on the shelf.
- Size selection: B6+ for letters and small objects, A5+ for notebooks and folded documents, A4+ for loose A4-format sheets or flat items.
For Paper and Bookbinding Enthusiasts
The slip-case construction is one of the more sophisticated box forms in bookbinding: an inner cardboard neck extends the base upwards so the lid sits perfectly flush without sticking. The chiyogami covering paper comes from Japan and is based on white kozu paper – a machine-made paper featuring fibres from the inner bark of the mulberry tree (kozo). In hand screen-printing, each colour is applied as a separate layer; the characteristically unprinted paper edges are created by design and are no flaw, but rather a sign of authenticity. Chiyogami patterns partly derive from templates dating back to the 17th century and were originally used for small paper objects such as dolls and boxes – a tradition that lives on directly in this box.
