Kaweco Fountain Pen Sport Ebonit Set (B, nib LUIBAN checked)
Ebonite is one of the oldest fountain pen materials – vulcanised natural rubber with sulphur, which develops a warm dark grain and continues to change with every year of use. The Kaweco Sport Ebonite embraces this material tradition and combines it with the familiar, compact Sport silhouette: 106 mm when closed, 135 mm with cap posted. The gold-plated steel nib – stub width B – is manufactured in Germany and features elaborate burin engraving.
Features
- Ebonite body made from natural rubber and sulphur: The material is entirely natural in origin. The high-gloss polished surface displays an individual brown marbling – no two pens are alike. Because the contained sulphur continues to react, each pen develops its own colour over time, which can be refreshed simply by repolishing.
- Gold-plated steel nib, stub width B, Made in Germany: The nib features burin engraving. Stub width B produces a rich, broad line – ideal for handwriting with pronounced character and for inks whose shading and sheen depend on nib width.
- Nostalgic clip in gold-tone: The clip included in the set holds the pen securely on a notebook cover or shirt pocket; the gold finish echoes the warm tones of the ebonite body.
- 10-pack of Kaweco ink cartridges: All ten Kaweco ink colours are included, in addition to the pre-installed royal blue cartridge – a complete overview of the cartridge range for direct comparison of different colours and ink properties.
- Historically inspired packaging: The set comes in a box inspired by packaging designs from over a hundred years ago – a complete ensemble of pen, clip and cartridges.
- Standard ink cartridge system: Compatible with Kaweco cartridges and the Kaweco Mini Converter for filling from an ink bottle.
Use & Tips
- Stub width B and ink selection: With stub width B, inks with strong shading or sheen reach their full potential – a deep blue-black that grows lighter in the dry zone, or a turquoise with golden shimmer at the ink edges. The broad line is also rewarding for inks with high luminance.
- Paper recommendation: On smooth, ink-resistant paper – calendered surfaces with low gsm or Tomoe River paper – ink variation really shines. On rougher papers, stub width B soaks in slightly deeper, making the line feel softer and fuller.
- Converter instead of cartridges: Those who invest in ink bottles can use any fountain pen ink with the Kaweco Mini Converter – this opens access to a significantly broader colour spectrum than cartridges alone.
- Caring for the ebonite surface: Direct, prolonged sunlight will lighten the material over months. If you want to preserve the dark, polished original surface, store the pen away from light. A soft polishing cloth brings back the shine and deep marbling at any time.
- Adding the clip: The gold nostalgic clip is pushed onto the cap and can be removed again – those carrying the Sport without a clip can reattach it whenever they wish.
For Fountain Pen Enthusiasts
Ebonite has a decisive sensory quality over modern acrylic and cellulose materials: the material is slightly warmer to the touch than acrylic, picks up body temperature more quickly, and therefore feels less cold and smooth in the hand. The scent of freshly polished ebonite – a light sulphur note – is a familiar and appreciated calling card for vintage fountain pen collectors. The burin engraving on the nib is no printed decoration, but a mechanically incised embellishment that appears three-dimensional even under magnification. The nib material is gold-plated steel – the plating is not merely decorative but protects the nib from the acids in some inks and gives the writing feel a marginally softer response than an untreated steel nib of the same width.
