Kaweco Liliput Fountain Pen black (B, nib LUIBAN checked)
The Kaweco LILIPUT is a fountain pen in cigar format – 97 mm short when the cap is on, made from milled aluminum in matte black. Since 1910, this design has remained unchanged: three housing parts, screw cap, no ornaments. The black aluminum variant carries this reduction consistently: cool, lightweight metal, smooth surface, no clip – a fountain pen that speaks through form and material, not through decoration.
Special Features
- Aluminum body, black: The body made from milled aluminum is unusually light for a metal instrument – noticeably less weight in your pocket than brass or stainless steel variants. The black surface is uniformly matte and retains its color; no tarnishing, no patina like copper or brass.
- 97 mm closed, 125 mm posted: Without the cap, the pen measures only 87 mm – too short for writing. The cap is screwed on at the back and extends to 125 mm, then it rests pleasantly secure in your hand, even for extended writing.
- Screw cap: The thread closes tight and secure – no accidental opening in pocket or writing case. Opening requires a few turns, which slows down and makes the writing ritual more conscious.
- Steel nib, made in Germany: The nib is a Bock steel nib in sport size, engraved with the Kaweco logo. It starts reliably, even after long periods of non-use, and can be exchanged at any time through the screw mechanism of the section.
- Standard short cartridges: The LILIPUT accepts international standard short cartridges. No converter fits in the narrow housing; for bottled inks, it is recommended to fill an empty cartridge with a syringe.
- Three nib sizes available: F (fine), M (medium) and B (broad) – all hand-tested by LUIBAN.
Use & Tips
- Pocket pen: 97 mm fits in any shirt or trouser pocket. For those always on the move, in meetings, or keeping a handwritten calendar, the LILIPUT is always a fully functional writing instrument at hand – without bulk, without smudging.
- Nib size F for dense writing and smooth paper: The fine nib is suitable for small handwriting, for tight line spacing, and for ink-proof, calendered paper. On slightly textured paper, it produces a crisp, precise line.
- Nib size M for everyday use and journaling: The medium nib size makes the flow somewhat more generous – pleasant on thinner papers, less prone to scratching with light pressure.
- Nib size B for signatures and accents: The broad nib produces solid lines, suitable for signatures and short notes where readability at first glance matters.
- Ink flow after inserting a fresh cartridge: Tap the pen gently once with the nib down on paper – this gets the ink flowing faster without waiting.
- Care of the aluminum body: Ink that gets on the metal surface should be wiped off promptly – aluminum is more sensitive to prolonged ink contact than stainless steel. This model is not suitable as an eyedropper pen.
- Optional clip: A separately available clip for the LILIPUT can be retrofitted if the pen case or shirt pocket needs a fixation.
For Pen Enthusiasts
The nib in the LILIPUT is a Bock steel nib in sport size (type 060) – the same nib class used in the Kaweco Sport. Through the screw thread on the section, the nib unit can be completely unscrewed and replaced with another size or a gold nib, provided the 060 thread fits. The ink is not document-proof; for archival texts or permanently readable handwriting, pigmented inks or specific document inks are better suited than the supplied cartridge ink. The aluminum variant in black develops no patina – those seeking a vibrant, changing surface should opt for the brass or copper variant of the series.
