Use & Tips
- One pen, multiple personalities: The screw-in nib construction of the Diamond 580 encourages you to keep several nib sizes on hand. EF and F for notes and journalling, M or B for calligraphy practice, 1.1 or 1.5 mm stub nibs for brush lettering and documents with stroke contrast.
- Stub nibs 1.1 and 1.5 mm: These italic nibs have a flat-cut writing point. Horizontal strokes are thin, downstrokes are broad – this creates the typical calligraphic contrast. Works particularly well with flowing, well-wetting inks; with thicker inks, ensure adequate ink flow.
- Changing without run-in time: Since this is a complete nib assembly, each replacement nib brings its own feed, matched to it. The writing behaviour matches from the very first line what TWSBI intends for this nib size.
- Choosing ink: All standard water-based fountain pen inks are suitable. Exercise caution with waterproof or document-fast pigment inks – thoroughly flush the feed after use to prevent blockages.
- 580AL and 580ALR: When switching to models with a metal grip section, remove the transparent grip section from the replacement nib and replace it with the original metal part – it can be removed without tools.
For Fountain Pen Enthusiasts
The nib of the Diamond 580 is made by JoWo (Berlin) and is a size #5. Over the Diamond series, TWSBI changed nib manufacturers (Schmidt → Bock → JoWo), but consistently maintained compatible mounting geometry – which is why current 580 nib assemblies also fit in 530 and 540 barrels. The grip section of the assembly can be removed, so the same nib/feed combination can also be used in 580AL and 580ALR versions with metal grip sections. The stub nibs 1.1 and 1.5 mm correspond to the italic grind: a flat writing tip with defined width, not a rounded stub compromise.
