Traveler's Notebook Regular Size Refill "003" blank
The Refill “003” is the blank insert for the Traveler's Notebook Regular – 64 pages of unlined MD paper in the narrow portrait format 11 × 21 cm, thread-bound and lying completely flat. MD paper was specially developed by Designphil: acid-free, with a fine, slightly textured surface that feels silky-smooth under the pen without slipping. The notebook fits in any Regular cover of the Traveler's Notebook and can be combined with other refills or swapped out.
Special Features
- MD paper, acid-free: Pen-friendly without any ifs or buts – ink doesn't run, doesn't feather, barely shows through with normal ink amounts. Roller inks and fine liners also behave in a controlled manner.
- Fine paper structure: The slight tooth provides tactile feedback when writing and keeps the line precise – noticeably pleasant with broad fountain pens or soft pencils.
- Blank layout: No lines, no dots – the page responds to everything: freehand text, sketches, layouts, collages, glued-in found pieces.
- Saddle Stitched: The notebook lies completely flat, even in the middle of the block – no folding, no resistance when writing right to the spine area.
- Made in Japan: Paper and binding from Japanese production.
Application & Tips
- Fountain pen with broad nib or calligraphy pen: The MD paper showcases ink colors particularly rich and brilliant – ideal for exploring shading and color shifts of aqueous inks.
- Sketches and hand lettering: Pencil glides smoothly, fine liners draw sharp edges. Watercolor in thin layers is possible; for heavy wetness, use an watercolor refill instead.
- Travel journal and scrapbooking: Tickets, labels, photos can be glued directly – the blank surface gives the layout room without imposing a structure.
- Combination with other refills: Multiple notebooks can be carried in the same cover with a Connecting Band – e.g., blank for sketches, lined for notes.
- Underlayer sheet: Those who occasionally write straight lines can place a dark line sheet underneath – the thin MD paper lets the lines show through well.
For Paper Enthusiasts
MD paper is not archival – aqueous fountain pen inks and pigment inks adhere well, but archival documentation should be tested with pigment-based inks. The paper is acid-free and therefore long-term stable: pages yellow hardly at all over the years. The slight texture is created by the calendering process and is deliberately kept lower than with classic typewriter paper – fountain pen nibs glide without resistance, while a pencil still finds enough grip to draw even strokes.
