Blackwing Red Pencils (6 pcs)
The Blackwing Copy Pencil Red is no ordinary colored pencil: its firm, bright red core is specially formulated for marking, corrections, and sketches – saturated, precise, and clearly visible on any paper. The matte red cedarwood shaft feels cool and smooth in the hand, and the gold square Blackwing ferrule holds a replaceable white eraser. Made in Japan, each pencil bears the characteristic design language of the Blackwing line, which began with Eberhard Faber in the 1930s and has been continued by Palomino since 2010.
Special Features
- Firm, bright red core: The copy pencil lead contains a water-soluble dye that produces more saturated and opaque marks than graphite – markings remain clearly visible even under finger pressure and are more smudge-resistant than ordinary colored pencil leads.
- Matte red cedarwood body: The shaft made from California cedarwood has a velvety, non-glossy surface. Cedarwood sharpens cleanly and evenly – even with a long-point sharpener for a flat, fine point.
- Iconic square gold ferrule: The characteristic angular Blackwing metal ferrule holds a replaceable eraser – the eraser can be pulled out and replaced without damaging the pencil.
- Red eraser: Attached directly to the ferrule and always at hand for quick corrections.
- Made in Japan: Blackwing pencils are manufactured in Japan from genuine California cedarwood and Japanese color leads – a combination that ensures consistent quality and even sharpening.
Application & Tips
- Proofreading and editing: Red markings on white paper are the classic workflow for corrections in manuscripts, proofs, and handwritten notes – the firm core produces clear, unambiguous lines without additional sharpening.
- Sketches and layout drafts: Red lines on paper or over pencil sketches set accents, mark changes, and visually separate layers – useful for illustrators, architects, and anyone working with multiple drawing layers.
- Music correction and score annotations: In music, red pencil on manuscript paper is an established convention for corrections and conductor markings.
- Sharpening tip: For an unusually flat, long point, a long-point pencil sharpener is recommended. The flat sharpening angle protects the core and noticeably extends the lifespan of the point.
- Changing the eraser: Simply pull the white eraser out of the metal ferrule and replace it with a Blackwing replacement eraser – compatible with all Blackwing replacement erasers in standard format.
For Paper and Pencil Enthusiasts
The core of a copy pencil differs fundamentally from a graphite core: instead of graphite and clay, it contains a water-soluble dye that penetrates the paper surface and can scarcely be removed mechanically. This is why red copy pencil lines appear particularly saturated on smooth, calendered paper – the surface absorbs the dye deeply. On rough paper, however, the core grips more strongly and the lines appear grainier. Those using the pencil for permanent markings in archival materials should note that copy pencil traces are more sensitive to moisture than graphite.
