Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolor No.406 BEIGE GRAY
Beige Gray No.406 is a muted, warm-neutral tone from Kuretake's Gansai Tambi line – a handcrafted, water-based pigment-rich watercolour from Japan. The shade combines Yellow (PY3), Iron Oxide Red (PR101), Iron Oxide Black (PBk11) and Titanium White (PW6) into a broken beige-grey that shifts between warm sand and soft stone grey depending on water dilution. The large-format pan dissolves easily with broad brushes and water brushes.
Features
- Pigment composition PY3 · PR101 · PBk11 · PW6: The combination of three earth pigments and titanium white creates a substantial, slightly opaque tone – more coverage than purely transparent watercolours, without taking on the character of gouache.
- Water-dependent coverage: With little water, you get opaque, matte application; more water makes the tone transparent and delicate – both possible in one pan. This makes Beige Gray equally suitable as a base and glazing colour.
- Creamy-soft consistency: The colour dissolves smoothly and evenly with the brush, without grittiness or cracking. Application flows controllably, even across larger areas.
- Large pan (48 × 28 mm): The format allows broad watercolour brushes to be used directly in the block – no tedious dissolving of small pots.
- Lightfast and non-toxic: The colour is lightfast and contains no hazardous substances requiring labelling.
- Compatible with all Gansai Tambi palettes: The individual pan sits in standardised plastic shells that fit into the familiar Gansai Tambi boxes.
Use & Tips
- As a background tone: Beige Gray works as a calm, warm-grey base for illustrations, botanical drawings or architecture sketches – the tone recedes and lets more colourful elements shine.
- Shadows on light earth tones: When working with ochre, sienna or beige tones, Beige Gray provides a fitting shadow colour that brings no blue cast.
- Sumi-e and East Asian brush painting: In sumi-e style, the tone replaces classical greys with a warmer note – ideal for rocks, bark or background washes.
- Mixed media: Lightened with white, it yields a powdery, dusty rose-grey; deepened with raw umber or ochre, a warm dark beige emerges. The earth pigments mix stably with other Gansai Tambi tones without flocculation.
- Calligraphy and brush lettering: The creamy consistency flows evenly across the bristles – suitable for broad brush lettering on watercolour paper or washi.
- Paper recommendation: Watercolour paper from 300 g/m² or Japanese washi. On lighter papers, the colour's opacity makes it more forgiving than purely transparent watercolours.
For Watercolour Enthusiasts
Gansai Tambi positions itself between classically transparent watercolours in the Western tradition and genuine gouache: the higher pigment concentration and specific binder create stronger colour application with simultaneously controlled flow. No.406 Beige Gray employs PBk11 (Iron Oxide Black, also known as synthetic magnetite) – a pigment renowned for its grittiness and weak granulating tendency. On rough watercolour paper this can produce a slightly textured surface. PW6 (Titanium White) increases light reflection and stabilises the tone during drying, so it reduces less dramatically than pure glazing colours. The combination is not archival.
